French Week in the city
Celebrate all things French at Le Petite France on the Karkloof Road, outside Howick, from 10am to 2pm on Sunday, May 22.
The event, kicking off Alliance Fraincaise Pietermaritzburg's French Week festivities, will include performances by singers Emma Farquharson and Ilse Myburgh and dancers from Chistlehurst Academics and Arts, who will be performing the CanCan.
Cheese platters will be available from Le Petite France, along with French onion soup, French-style baguettes and cheesecake. Bring your own drinks.
Members of the hosts, the Alliance Française Pietermaritzburg, will be on hand to talk about the organisation and the work it does in the community.
French Week will continue on Monday, May 23 at 10.30 am, with a guided visit to the Prince Imperial Exhibition in the uMsunduzi Museum.
At 12.30pm on Tuesday, May 24, will be the Prince Impérial lunch for the doyennes of the Alliance Française.
Wednesday, May 25’s activities start at 12.30pm with the Prince Imperial lunchtime concert at Project Gateway in Pietermaritzburg, featuring Gateway Christian School Grade 7s, a fashion show from the Gateway School of Fashion and dancing by learners at Chistlehurst Academics and Arts. At 6pm for 6.30pm, there will be a Franco-Italian Pizza soirée.
On Friday, May 27 at 11am there will be a lecture on French architectural features in Pietermaritzburg at the Tatham Art Gallery, with an optional lunch at Café Tatham afterwards at your own cost.
The Midlands events will end at 9.30am on Saturday, May 28, with a Memorial Mass in the Allard House Chapel for the Prince Imperial. The chapel was the first Catholic Church built in KwaZulu-Natal by the French Missionary Order of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate.
