Michaux living out his royal military dream

- Shorné Bennie

Wyatt James Michaux’s (22) dream of being a British officer is coming true, with his recent selection to the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst (RMAS).

The Maritzburg College Old Boy joined the British Army in 2019, and has been serving in the army since January 2020.

Describing the RMAS selection process as a long and arduous one, Michaux underwent a two-day selection process which determined his suitability for the Army Officer Selection Board (AOSB). There are various tests that Michaux underwent, including fitness tests, public speaking, and planning ability. The RMAS course lasts approximately 11 months, and on completion, he will hold the rank of second lieutenant.

“Some of the basic training will include basic military skills, fitness and decision-making, development and leadership skills and a major academic component. Officer cadets select their future corps or regiment at this stage. Term three puts the officer cadets’ new skills into practice on complex and demanding training exercises in the UK and overseas. The commissioning course is accredited by various academic and professional institutions,” Michaux explained.

He has had an incredible time abroad so far, receiving some of the best training and experiences in the last three years.

He even spent the Covid-19 lockdowns in the United Kingdom, Zambia and Kenya with the military.

So far, he has completed his basic training at the Infantry Training Centre. He was awarded the Best Recruit and the Soldier’s Soldier Award. He was also awarded the title of Ranger.

Michaux said he wants to further his studies at a British University.

“RMAS counts as one year towards a degree in leadership and strategic management, which I intend to complete. I am looking forward to furthering my studies in either law or philosophy, politics and economics,” he said.

Notable alumni of the RMAS include Prince William (Duke of Cambridge) and Prince Harry, Winston Churchill and generations of Luxembourg princes.

Michaux is thankful for all the support he has received so far.

“I have been incredibly fortunate to have a wide network of people supporting me, ranging from the officers of my battalion, ex British Army officers, officers of the regiments I’m hoping to join and, of course, my parents. Along the journey, I have realised the saying, ‘its not what you know, it’s who you know’ rings true. I would not be where I am today without the help of the people around me,” said Michaux.
