Maritzburg College learner making radio waves

- Shorné Bennie

Grade 9 Maritzburg College learner Muhle Khambule’s passion for presenting news has landed him the opportunity to co-host the Dundee July Radio Show on July 16. The show will also be aired on SABC 2.

At just 15 years old, Muhle is making radio waves as one of South Africa’s youngest radio presenters.

His passion to make news palatable and interesting to kids, inspired his lockdown venture, Smashing Kids News, a YouTube channel dedicated to unpacking news and current affairs in a way that is interesting and easy to understand for children.

Since April, he now also presents on Neutral Stereo FM, an online radio station, where he does the 4 pm slot of ‘Tuesday Trendy News’, bringing the news “hot, fresh and spicy”.

Muhle still runs Smashing Kids News, all the while balancing his schooling.

Smashing Kids News, now has a following of 1300 subscribers on TikTok. A new episode is aired once a school term, on the last Friday of the school holiday.

It contains news, music, sport, celebrity news segments, as well as a spelling segment called ‘Vocabulate it’, teaching children how to spell and learn the meaning of new words. The ‘Trendz’ segment also places world trends in the spotlight.

Smashing Kids News is aimed at children aged 12 to 16 and is available on social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. Muhle is not the only presenter on the online news channel; he has enlisted the help of his friends, who were also interested in presenting news.

Muhle said he feels blessed to have made such progress in the industry he is passionate about and plans to pursue as a career.

“I look at myself in the mirror

at times and I cannot believe that I have come this far. I feel blessed to have the opportunity I have been given,” said Muhle.

Co-hosting the Dundee July Radio Show is another big highlight he is looking forward to.

He sees it as a stepping stone for a future in the media and entertainment industry.

“I would really want to join a career in the media industry. I can see myself pursuing journalism, and this is a good start,” said Muhle.
