Celebrate heritage and ‘fun-raise’ to keep Ward 25 clean

- Jordan Erradu

If a helicopter ride is on your bucket list, Ward 25’s Heritage Day fun run should be on your diary for Saturday, September 24.

Residents of Ward 25 will converge at Settlers Park (opposite Grey’s Hospital) on September 24 for an action-packed Heritage Day celebration and ‘Fun-Raiser’.

Organised jointly by the Ward 25 Committee and the Townhill Community Policing Forum (CPF), the event is set to attract a large gathering of residents for a fun-filled day of social and recreational interaction.

The day will commence at 7:30 am with a fun run/walk followed by five-a-side soccer friendlies hosted by Pillars Soccer Academy, who use the park as their training facility. There will also be a market and heritage food fair and a kidz zone. The day will culminate in a bring and braai for families in the afternoon.

The highlight of the fun run will be a lucky draw prize of a once in a lifetime helicopter trip across the city.

The day will also serve as a fundraiser to purchase equipment for ‘Tom’s Team’ who have inspired the community with the clean-ups they have carried out at the park and throughout Ward 25. Brush cutters and a ride-on mower are on founder Jan Hankey’s bucket list for the team, which she supervises on a daily basis.

Hankey is also launching a ‘Pop

Bucks in the Bucket’ initiative, where money can be ‘deposited’ into a bucket which will be available during the event. The bucket will also contain banking details for donations that can be made via social media.

Rex Boreham, treasurer of the Townhill CPF and one of the coordinators of the day, said: “Once again, the CPF and security companies have risen to the occasion and are working as a team to sponsor our event. Not only will they marshal the fun run/walk, but they have sponsored jumping castles and activities for the kidz zone.”

“So bring your furry friends for the 4 km walk and the 7 km run and then enjoy the food fair, market stalls and kidz zone for the rest of the day,” added Boreham.

“We have a very strong, active CPF that is committed to the safety and security of Ward 25. This is not only made possible by dedicated residents, but also our security companies, who go beyond the call of duty for our community,” said James Martin, chairman of the CPF.

The five-a-side soccer matches promise to be hard fought and exciting. Councillor Mike Bond has formed ‘The Bond Team’ and has challenged the CPF, security companies, schools, churches, organisations and businesses in the ward to form their own teams and to try to beat his team.

“The Heritage Day event will be an ideal opportunity to build community spirit with family, friends and neighbours. We also want to reconnect and celebrate all those who rose up to protect us during the looting of 2021,” said Lara Edmonds, spokesperson for Ward 25.

Endorsing the event, Nondumiso Mkhize of the Ward 25 Committee said: “We really do need to be the change we seek. A true sense of community is a wonderful thing and something we are keen to cultivate, so let’s all get involved.”
