Local attorney appointed to Aspirant Judges Programme
Pietermaritzburg-based attorney, Jennifer Anthoo, has become the first KwaZulu-Natal female to be appointed to the Aspirant Women Judges Programme.
The Aspirant Women Judges Programme is intended to give intensive training, skills, experience and knowledge that would equip aspiring women judges with the skills required to be considered for appointments as judges.
The programme aims to afford women the same opportunities as their male counterparts.
Being selected for the programme is a huge step-up for Anthoo, who has always been a warrior for children’s rights and gender equality. She has spent her life protecting and empowering women and children.
Anthoo was born and raised in Pietermaritzburg and has over 30 years’ experience in the profession.
Anthoo said that she was very grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Aspirant Judges Programme.
“I will dedicate myself throughout the training while proudly representing my home town. I aspire to inspire women to work hard and aim higher. I was born to make a difference. I believe in justice, which is what shaped me to become this fearful woman today,” said Anthoo.
She added that her journey has been long and challenging, but she managed to climb because of the never-ending support of her family, friends and colleagues.
In 1992, Anthoo joined the National Association of Democratic Lawyers (NADEL) as a student and has been a member ever since.
NADEL is an association that hosts workshops and makes submissions in respect of constitutional law. She currently serves as the chairperson of the Pietermaritzburg branch.
Her NADEL association serves as testimony for women empowerment.
Further to being an attorney who fights for women and children’s rights, Anthoo is the president of the Society of St Vincent De Paul, an international charity organisation that provides assistance to indigent and underprivileged people in the northern areas.
The charity is called Lady of Good Health, and operates in the northern areas as a way to give back to the community where she was born and raised. The areas covered include Raisethorpe, Newholmes, Copesville, Swapo and other neighbouring areas.
The charity provides groceries to about 25 families every month through the generous contributions of members of the community in the northern areas.
