Ayoung Pietermaritzburg couple with a zest for life have given up their mundane everyday lifestyle and embarked on an adventure of a lifetime.

Lance (26) and Skyler (24) Deetlefts, left South Africa on February 4 and are backpacking from south to north Africa utilising public modes of transport like; mini, small and large buses, motorbike taxis, ferries, trains, dugout boats, dhow sailboats and tuk-tuks.

The Deetlefs (Lance is a plumber and Skyler an occupational therapist), said that they decided to backpack after getting stuck in the 7am to 5pm rat-race. Tired of the same work routine, the pair decided to relocate to Ireland.

The idea to traverse across the continent stemmed from the challenges the couple faced while waiting to relocate.

“We decided we needed a change and thought a great adventure would be perfect, especially considering we had made a big life-changing decision to move overseas for work. However, the process and paperwork takes a few months so we thought why not sell everything and travel while we wait,” Skyler said.

They packed their two backpacks and set off to Zimbabwe on the first leg of their journey.

“Our favourite country has been Tanzania with Zanzibar being a highlight for sure. Malawi also stole our hearts with the friendly locals and beautiful sunsets over the lake,” said Skyler.

When asked her what they loved the most about travelling, she said meeting new people and making long lasting friendships has by far been the most important.

"From the welcoming locals to fellow travellers from around the world, we have made incredible friendships allowing us to enjoy every moment. Learning new languages and indulging in the local cultures of each country has been so unique and memorable,” she said.

The couple are currently in Kenya, and had originally planned to go to Uganda and Rwanda hereafter. However, their budget does not permit them to do so.

“In order to complete our goal of travelling from the south to the north of Africa, we will be heading straight from Kenya to Ethiopia next and then fly over Sudan to reach Egypt,” said Skyler.

The Deetlefs said they would like to travel to at least 100 countries in their lifetime.

“We would also love to start a family. However, this won't stop us from travelling as we believe experiences shape who you are and who you become,” Skyler said.

She said they have always been passionate about travel, experiences and learning about new cultures.

“Ever since we started dating, this has been a priority for us instead of spending money on material things,” she said.

The duo were bitten by the "travel-bug" after their first backpacking trip together around Thailand and Cambodia in 2019.
