Get a Six-Pack (of Fruit Ciders)

Men's Health (South Africa) - - GUY DRINKS - / KENNY GOULD & KELLEIGH KOREVAAR

OF ALL THE TRENDS IN BEER AND CIDERS, ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING IS FRUIT-INFUSED BREWING. YOU’RE SCEPTICAL, AS YOU SHOULD BE – YOU’VE BEEN BURNED BEFORE BY SICKLY-SWEET FRUIT-A-RITAS AND BOTTLES THAT NEED A WEDGE OF CITRUS TO TASTE GOOD. BUT A NEW CLASS OF FRUIT-TINGED DRINKS WILL CHANGE YOUR MIND. SINCE WE’RE GETTING RID OF THE BEER BELLIES, WE’RE THROWING OUT THE BEERS ALONG WITH THE WINTER LAYERS IN FAVOUR OF SOME FRUIT CIDERS. PLUS, THESE CIDERS ARE BREWED WITH ACTUAL FRUIT; LAST TIME WE CHECKED, THAT’S A WHOLE LOT HEALTHIER THAN YOUR FAVOURITE BREAD IN A BOTTLE. BOTTOM LINE: IGNORE THE HATERS AND GIVE THEM A TRY

LITTLE WOLF Hibiscus

This drink is brewed using dried hibiscus petals, which adds a tart, red-berry flavour to the dry apple cider. The hibiscus also contains tannins, which contributes a distinctive bitter element to create body and an elegant mouthfeel. Dry, well-balanced and refreshing, this cider shows local really is lekker.

LOXTONIA CIDER Stone Fruit

Another local brand we love – this cider is made with handpicked apples straight from the Ceres Valley. The stone fruit adds an unusual, sweet fruity characteristic with notes of nectarine to a crisp, naturally fermented apple cider that contains no preservatives or artificial additives. And it’s launched just in time for summer. Sold.

STRONGBOW Gold Apple

Strongbow has paid tribute to – and really highlighted – the apple flavour in this golden cider. It has a rich and complex aromatic array that is dominated by several varieties of apple. Coupled with a refreshing texture that perfectly balances acidity, sharpness, sourness, softness and sweetness, it’s a real winner.

EVERSON’S Pear

This is South Africa’s first pear cider, and it’s crafted using artisanal methods, as well as being aged and wooded. This sweeter cider has an exceptional floral character. Because of the alkaline fruit, there is a slightly waxy mouthfeel and a softer, creamier finish. Fair warning: this slides down when you’re on braai duty.

HUNTER’S Hard Lemon

If you though Hunter’s just produced the Gold and Dry, you’re wrong. This cider is best for those committed beer lovers. The hard cider offers a mild sweetness typical of Hunter’s whilst the dash of lemon adds a zesty twist to quench any thirst. Best part? There’s no need to wedge a lemon slice in your bottle.

KOPPARBERG Strawberry & Lime

Kopparberg is the best-selling pear cider in the world, and once you’ve had a sip, you’ll know why. It delivers an intense fruity flavour that smells like strawberry and summer. If you’re not into sweet drinks, serving this cider over ice blocks makes it the perfect refreshing poolside companion. Who said men can’t drink pink drinks?
