You’ve probably heard that sugar is uniquely damaging to your metabolism, your waistline, and your overall health. And yet you just can’t stop yourself. It’s like you’re addicted to the white powder.
This “lone gunman” theory – putting sugar at the centre of everything that’s gone wrong with our diet – sounds convincing, and certainly sells a lot of books. But so far, the evidence is underwhelming that sugar is much (or any) worse than other refined carbs such as white flour. But since so many of the junk kilojoules we consume are in the form of sugar, it deserves its new-found status
