Opportunity to legally dispose of hazardous waste

-

Disposable hazardous household waste may legally be disposed of during two open days which will be hosted by the Mossel Bay Municipality for the free collection of household hazardous waste.

Hazardous waste includes everyday items such as old motor oil, car batteries or other batteries, anti-freeze, diesel and other automotive fluids, corrosive or poisonous cleaners such as drain and toilet cleaners, oven cleaners and spot remover, pesticides, fluorescent light bulbs, aerosol cans including paint cans and even furniture polish.

Go to the municipal buildings in Great Brak River on 27 February or the Mossel Bay town hall on 28 February, where containers will be made available from 08:00 to 14:30 for the free and safe disposal of hazardous waste.

Items not accepted

For the safety of all involved, the municipality will not accept any explosives or ammunition, nor radioactive waste.

It is imperative that the refuse is transported and disposed of in a strong container, preferably the original container the item was sold in. It is also strongly advised that the hazardous items should not be mixed prior to being disposed of.

Transfer stations

Residents may dump their ordinary household waste only at the KwaNonqaba and Sonskynvallei waste collection facilities, from where it is transferred to the waste disposal site behind PetroSA.

Garden waste is accepted at the Louis Fourie, KwaNonqaba, Sonskynvallei and Great Brak River waste transfer stations.

However, building rubble can only be dumped at Great Brak River, while limited facilities exist for the collection of used oil, tyres and electronic waste at KwaNonqaba and Sonskynvallei.
