41 qualify for laser run championships

-

Eden MPA held their Laser run championships this past weekend at Glenwood House Sport Grounds and are excited that 41 athletes qualified to take part at the Western Cape Laser Run Championships on 15 April in Paarl.

“Laser run is definitely the fastest growing discipline of Modern Pentathlon. Our first disabled athlete, Kerri O’loughin, also finished her race on her own. We are very proud of this brave young girl.”

Participants start with a short sprint to the shooting range. From there, using a laser pistol, they shoot their designated target until they register five successful hits, or for 50 seconds, whichever comes first. They will then leave the range and run a 400- or 800-metre circuit (depending on their age), returning to the shooting range for round two of the shoot.

They complete this circuit four times, alternating between running and shooting, to a total of 3.2km and 20 direct hits on the target. Depending on age categories, the length and distance of the run may vary.

This sport is extremely fun and adaptable and socially inclusive so everything from the distance run to the shooting can be shortened or lengthened depending on the participant’s skill level. The real skill is not burning yourself out on the run so you can still shoot straight, but still running fast enough to win.
