A charming French affair

- Jeanne Pienaar

They are young, mean and lean and fabulously talented. Two virtuosos - one on piano, the other on violin, one from Port Elizabeth, the other from Cape Town.

The musical rapport between David Bester and José Dias is said to leave audiences breathless. The Mossel Bay Arts Society has secured a concert by this duo that will take the audience on a journey through French Baroque violin music - and the public is warmly invited. The programme will touch on authentic French nationalist sounds, travel into impressionism and stormy romanticism and glide into suave sensuality.

Maestro David Bester is a violinist who holds two master’s degrees. At the University of Stellenbosch, he studied under Suzanne Martens and obtained a B Mus (cum laude) and a master’s degree (cum laude) in performance.

Then he graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp with a master’s degree in performing arts under the guidance of Professor Alissa Margulis. Pianist José Dias is well-known in South African concert halls and is currently working on his doctoral degree at the University of Cape Town. A first for Mossel Bay, these two artists will perform at the Dias Museum on 21 June at 19:30. Tickets - at R100 for members of the Arts Society and R120 for non-members and R30 for schoolchildren - may be booked via Abé Meintjes (083 268 3718) or Annette Strydom (076 857 2900).
