Autumn alliance with a twist

- Golfer Gloria

As the shadows grow longer and the golden leaves fall from the trees, our ladies' committee decided to hold a special autumn alliance last week, with a little twist of lime just to take the smiles off our faces.

The twist was that an innocent little yellow ball was introduced to the equation. This pretty, little innocuous object soon morphed into a malicious manipulative monster, with a will entirely of its own, proof of how much one’s mind controls this little game called golf.

The innocent, little, yellow ball was meant to be a bonus factor, with the user being able to double her points scored with this ball, and of course it had to rotate through the four girls in the alliance, so everyone had equal opportunity to make double points ... sounds like a bargain, but as mentioned that little inanimate object caused all sorts of havoc and mental strain.

I noticed girls handing it over like a hot potato to the next "customer".

The lime twist was that if this little yellow darling went missing, it was deemed gone for good and even though two scores were meant to count, one had to be the yellow ball’s.

(Ok, if lost they kindly allowed two other scores to count but no bonuses, and if you did not lose it and made a yellow zero then only one score got counted ... almost Hobson’s choice).

Soup with bread and some pastries were served after the game to appease those that came home with all manner of sad stories about that "doggone yellow ball" and its disobedient antics, but to put a smile back on our faces we were joined by a lovely group of "golden oldies" for the 19th hole.

Winners with 119 points were team Gloria Greyvenstein, Gail Botha, Magda Kaltenbrunn and Lizette Kruger. Second place with 117 went to Annette Pretorius, Leoni de Beer, Annemarie Luggen and Froucke de Lange.

They also made the most score with "you know what" and were judged to have the most original outfits for the day. In third place with 113 points were team Marie Smith, Regina Herbst, Ineke Botes and Laetitia Higgs.

Gail and Annette won nearest to the pins. Thanks to Broodmandjie for the rolls, Big Joe for pastries and the club for the pumpkin soup, enjoyed by all.
