Children enjoy chess tournament

- Tersia Marais

The annual Tsogo Sun Moves for Life chess tournament for primary schools was held at the Garden Court Hotel on Saturday.

Around 50 excited learners from primary schools Ridgeview, Garden Route, Isalithiso, Dias, St Blaize and Imekhaya participated in the two competitions – phase 1 (grades 1-3) and Open.

The Moves for Life is an initiative in which Tsogo Sun encourages learners to socially engage with others from their community and to expose chess players to the tournament environment, with the procedures and rules.

Fazel Primo and George Lawerlot deserve to be mentioned for their passion and dedication as they spend a lot of time with the learners of these six schools. There are two chess programmes: the first is mathematical chess and the other is sport chess. The winners of the phase 1 competition were Ridgeview, with Garden Route in second place and St Blaize third.

The boys' winner was Keile Hurling from Dias and Awethu Fana from Ridgeview, the girls' winner.
