Intense holiday safety drive

- Nickey le Roux

The festive season is officially here and to ensure everyone has a safe and memorable holiday, the Mossel Bay Municipality and law enforcement agencies urge residents and visitors to take care of their own personal safety. Several arrangements such as increased visibility by police officers, municipal law enforcement officers and neighbourhood watch members aim to deter criminality, especially at crime hotspots, such the stretch of beach from Dias to De Bakke.

Horse and quad bike patrols along the beach started this past weekend and will continue for the duration of the festive season.

The Mossel Bay branch of Afriforum supported the crime fighting initiative by supplying a caravan that will be used as a joint control centre for the various law enforcement agencies. The caravan is at the De Bakke Beach parking area.

The municipal call centre will be operational and all service delivery matters may be reported on 044 606 5000.

Meeting daily

Municipal representatives will be meeting daily with all roleplayers, including the SAPS, neighbourhood watches and Mossel Bay Tourism to ensure optimal service delivery standards and the safety of residents and visitors, municipal spokesperson Colin Puren said.

Traffic

Mossel Bay Traffic Services will be actively patrolling all municipal areas over the festive season with regular roadblocks to be set up at various strategic points in and around Mossel Bay. Motorists and road users are asked to always obey all road and traffic rules and to exercise patience during peak traffic, especially during the busy holiday period.

Access and point control

Point patrols will take place from 13 December until 5 January from 08:00 until 18:00 at various points at Santos and De Bakke beaches, as well as strategic points along Louis Fourie Road, Hartenbos, Great Brak River and in the Heiderand area.

Access control will also take place at various parking areas from 14 December until 6 January daily: De Bakke from 09:00 until 24:00; Santos from 09:00 until 19:00; Dias Beach parking from 09:00 and 19:00; and Suiderkruis day campsite from 09:00 and 22:00.
