Vehicle in water uncommon - NSRI

- Louise Karsten

The incident which took place at the slipway at the Mossel Bay Yacht and Boat Club last weekend, in which a vehicle rolled down the slipway and landed in the water, is according to sources, not common.

The bakkie rolled down the slipway and into the water while launching a boat from its trailer. According to bystanders on the scene, the boat was being launched from the trailer when an unexpected high swell swept the bakkie into the water. Mossel Bay National Sea Rescue Institute spokesperson, André Fraser, says Sea Rescue has hardly ever dealt with an incident such as this.

"This is the first time that I can remember that a vehicle was completely pulled into the water." The NSRI despatched the sea rescue craft, St Blaze Rescuer, and an NSRI rescue vehicle to the scene. Although local police responded to the call-out, police spokesperson Wo Pieter Koekemoer says no case is being investigated.

Fraser says the casualty vehicle and the trailer, as well as the boat, were recovered.

The owner of the bakkie did not wish to comment on the incident.
