Local man is keen to start mission

- Linda Sparg

A Mossel Bay man has a vision to start a mission in town.

Pieter Kamfer says: "The mission's work would be proactive. People would work practically with a counsellor."

The mission would be suitable for people who had suffered trauma. "These people build walls for the sake of personal protection and they can't give or receive love. It is about me, myself, I." Kamfer wants the mission to be a non-profit organisation which would give value to society and people's lives.

He points out: "The Salvation Army in England played an important role at the time when England was class based. It catered for people who had been disregarded."

He said the people who came out of the Salvation Army became missionaries. Kamfer said his mission would also be suitable for people "who want to get away from society for a period of time to go for help".

He wants his mission to be similar to the KwaSizabantu Mission near Greytown in KwaZulu-Natal. "People will be able to connect with their creator, prepare for eternity and give value to society. I want people who are interested and who have a similar vision to me, to contact me (060 472 2935)."

Kamfer has worked as a taxi driver, a handyman and a massage therapist in Mossel Bay. He has also studied horticulture and has worked in gardens.

His father, Professor PPA Kamfer, worked for the Dutch Reformed Church in Africa missions in KZN and the Transkei, which is where Kamfer grew up.
