KwaNonqaba pageant to be hosted online

- Cornelle Carstens

In 2020, the Mr and Miss KwaNonqaba community event is in its 10th year.

Entries for this year's event closed last week and the coordinators are working hard towards preparing a gala event "second to none", which will be hosted online on 28 August.

"Due to Covid-19, we are going to crown our young ambassadors online," says event coordinator, Vuyolwethu Mfumbe.

In recent years, the event grew to include new categories such as Tiny Miss KwaNonqaba, Miss Jnr KwaNonqaba, Miss Teen KwaNonqaba, presented in addition to Miss KwaNonqaba and Mr KwaNonqaba 2020.

Mfumbe says the focus on this event is not the mere search for models and beauty, but to find ordinary people based in KwaNonqaba who are doing extraordinary things. "We are in dire need of sponsors for the winners, to serve as a motivation in their journey to become game changers. We are grateful to each and every person who has reached out to support this event."

Mfumbe, who is also a keen youth developer and activist, said that in honour of Naledi Phandingawo, a former Miss KwaNonqaba who was murdered in June this year, the contestants will be participating in a campaign, #SayNotoGenderBasedViolence.

"With this, we want to speak out on behalf of other victims in order to break this vicious cycle of abuse."
