Surfer Kids NPO gives food to 24 families
With the outbreak of the global Covid-19 pandemic, The Surfer Kids NPO has revamped its existing feeding scheme, in order to deliver food relief to all the families of children participating in its Core Surf Programme. Prior to the outbreak of the pandemic, within normal operation, children received daily meals at the organisation’s Diaz Beach headquarters, as part of the daily Core Surf Programme.
With the revamped feeding scheme, launched during the initial phase of South Africa’s lockdown, the organisation supports not only the children but also their families.
The ongoing distribution of food parcels is handled by The Surfer Kids’ coaches, Sinesipho Ngungu and Luthando Lovemore Ndabambi. To date a total of 24 families have received 60 food parcels over the course of three months, at an average cost of R400 per food parcel.
Surf Programme for its group of 35 children on 20 March, a week before South Africa’s lockdown took effect on 26 March. The programme remains suspended and it is unclear when it will be allowed to resume operations.
Prior to lockdown, the meals provided by the organisation on a daily basis were, for some of the children, their only nutritious meals. And, with the outbreak of Covid-19, it was clear that this source of nutrition would be more important than ever before.
Based on feedback from the families, the support provided by The Surfer Kids during lockdown has played an important role in alleviating the challenging economic circumstances.
The expansion of The Surfer Kids’ feeding scheme was made possible entirely by donations from the wider community and the organisation continues to appeal for donations to support its ongoing efforts.
