Top musicians at Dias Museum
Esteemed musicians from Johannesburg, Eugene Joubert, and Gerrit Koorsen, will perform Song of Norway at the Dias Museum on 14 August.
South African pianist Eugene Joubert has established himself as a collaborative musician of note.
He made his US debut at the Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC in May 2007 during the Conservatory Project.
Further international performances include a recital tour throughout Denmark in 2015 as part of the South African Opera Ensemble, as well as concerts in Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro, Zambia and Mozambique.
Locally, Eugene has appeared at the Wakkerstroom Music Festival annually since 2016 and performs regularly for the Lowveld Chamber Music Association in Nelspruit.
Eugene has performed as répétiteur for numerous operatic productions in South Africa and abroad. Eugene completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano performance, at the Univeristy of Pretoria, and holds a master’s degree in collaborative piano at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music in Houston, Texas. Eugene was appointed as the Head of Piano Studies at St Mary’s School, Waverley in 2018.
Koorsen
Gerrit Koorsen studied the cello with Tilla Henkins, Arend Brink and Michael Haller. He is a freelance player for orchestras in Gauteng and an active chamber musician. He appeared as soloist with the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra, PACOFS Symphony Orchestra and Free State Youth Symphony orchestra and has collaborated with the University of Johannesburg Choir, Akustika chamber singers other choirs in Gauteng.
Gerrit has performed at Aardklop, Innibos and the Wakkerstroom. He is a founding member of the Pangea String Quartet, a Johannesburg-based chamber ensemble. He also performs in contemporary music, jazz, and pop settings and has contributed to the albums of local and international artists.
Apart from his life as a cellist, Gerrit is a research scientist. He obtained his PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Cambridge, having been awarded a scholarship by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
He is deputy head of the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Johannesburg.
