Ironman, Buff bring huge gains

- Louise Karsten

The economy of Mossel Bay has been boosted by millions of rands by the Buffalo Rally and Ironman 70.3 triathlon during the past two weeks.

The Buffalo Rally saw 4 200 bikers visit Mossel Bay, bringing the town’s accommodation occupancy rate to 90%.

The local economy was boosted by more than R10 million over the three days.

“More than just an economic injection, temporary job opportunities were also created and the proceeds from the bar as well as Nomads Motorcycle Club takings will go to local charities,” says portfolio chairman for Finance at the Mossel Bay Municipality, Mark Furness.

About 2 000 entrants descended on the town for the Ironman 70.3 last weekend.

Furness says that with the two events back to back, Mossel Bay saw nearly two weeks at almost full accommodation occupancy. Mayor Dirk Kotzé said: "The combined income of the two events is estimated at R24 million. Reports have been received from a filling station that it had its best weekend in more than 20 years. Restaurants saw a profit growth of between 30% and 50% for the two consecutive weeks."

Kotzé says more than 8 000 visitors enjoyed the attractions and cuisine of Mossel Bay during the Ironman.

Lieutenant-Colonel Eddie Williams, commander of the Da Gamaskop Police Station, said that Ironman 70.3 was a crime-free event.

The event was the first of a three-year contract of Mossel Bay hosting the event.

Challenges

Kotzé says it has been noted that traffic congestion was a challenge during the Ironman 70.3.

"I acknowledge there were some logistical challenges that caused inconvenience to residents."

On Monday, 7 November, an event debriefing session was hosted at the council chambers with the municipality, the event organisers and other service providers involved on the day.

An in-depth discussion, taking a critical look at the overall success of the event, was held. "Plans are already on the table for improving on this year’s event, which by all accounts was a resounding success.

"Rest assured that we have learnt from this year and, where necessary, will improve next year." Kotzé says accommodation establishments reported "return bookings" and it is believed it will be a bumper festive holiday season.

Lieschke Steven-Jennings, acting chief operations officer at Mossel Bay Tourism says participatory sports events attract competitors from all over the world, most of whom bring multiple people with them and often extend their event-related stay into a holiday.

"These events have a positive economic impact for our shops, restaurants and accommodation establishments. Successful events contribute to the image of Mossel Bay and attract both local and international tourists.

“Hosting these events places Mossel Bay municipal areas on the map, expands our economy, provides media exposure, promotes development and stimulates infrastructure upgrades."

Kotzé thanks the community. "The good atmosphere was contagious and we all enjoyed the messages of support shared on posters by spectators, lining the roads. An event of this magnitude requires excellent organisation and the hard work of dedicated volunteers and support staff."
