Leak to be sealed by end of month

-

PetroSA has given an update on the leak in one of the PetroSA pipelines, linking the offshore FA Platform with the GTL Refinery near Mossel Bay.

The affected pipeline is within a PetroSA servitude, which crosses Nautilus Bay Estate outside Mossel Bay.

PetroSA spokes-person Marlene Khumalo says the function of the pipeline is to transfer hydrocarbon condensate and water from the FA Platform to the GTL Refinery.

"The leak is in an onshore section of the pipeline, which runs below ground, about 500m from the coastline.

"The leaking pipe section is inside a brick and concrete enclosure, which makes it possible to pump out and safely dispose of the water/condensate mixture, leaking from the pipe."

Khumalo says this disposal process is currently in place and it prevents any further contamination of the surrounding area. "We envisage that the leak will be sealed off before the end of February."

She told Mossel Bay Advertiser the confined nature of the enclosure makes the repair works extremely dangerous to personal safety. "Putting in place all precautionary measures to protect life while executing the works has contributed to delays."

Khumalo says detailed assessments have been done to ensure every phase of this operation can be completed without affecting the safety of the residents, PetroSA personnel and to minimise any further impact on the environment.

"The scope of remedial works also includes the area that would have been affected by the leak."

The repair methodology involves the fitment of a clamp sealing device, which will be designed and manufactured by a specialist supplier. It is also planned to replace the damaged section of pipeline at the next suitable opportunity.

"PetroSA would like to thank the residents of the Nautilus Bay Estate for their patience and cooperation while these activities are taking place. PetroSA continuously strives to reduce the impact of our operations on the environment.

“The safety of our employees and the local community remains a top priority," Khumalo said.
