More gift boxes donated
Mossel Bay resident Renay du Plessis has compassion for the children of fishermen, who spend months at sea.
She started a non-profit organisation, Fisherman's Kit Gift Box, to collect donations for these children.
Renay notes that in 2005, 14 crew members of the fishing vessel, Lindsay, died after it collided with a container vessel, 20 nautical miles south of Port Elizabeth.
Renay says: "I feel so sad I could not include all of the deceased's children and grandchildren when handing out gift boxes."
For the few grandchildren she could include to give a gift box, "it was a honour to put a smile on their faces as a small token of remembrance", Renay said after handing out the boxes on 11 February.
Her heart goes out to all fishermen's children because she "understands the harsh circumstances in which fishermen work".
By handing out gift boxes she aims for the children to experience a sense of acknowledgement and appreciation for what their fathers are prepared to do, putting their lives on the line to put food on tables. Renay urges the community and businesses to support the Fisherman's Kit Gift Box initiative, to help children have a "sense of belonging and receiving support".
The organisation is planning the next handover of gift boxes for December. Items in the gift boxes include: toiletries, stationery, toys, a beanie, gloves and a scarf. The children are given sweets, chips and cooldrinks separately.
Fisherman's Kit Gift Box thanks all sponsors who help to make this initiative a success.
