Upgrades of intersections progressing well - municipality
It has been a particularly active time along Marsh Street regarding various upgrades – some completed and other still in construction phase – since the start of 2024.
This was noted in a statement from Mossel Bay Municipality this week.
The statement read: "Currently the implementation of contract TDR454/2022/2023, comprising the upgrading of three intersections in the Mossel Bay central business district, is well under way."
In terms of this contract, the intersections of Marsh and Beach, Marsh and Kloof and Marsh and Field streets are being upgraded to raised intersections.
The purpose of this upgrade is to implement traffic calming and to provide a level crossing for pedestrians along Marsh Street.
The municipality stated that the scope of the work, included paving of the intersections and the repair and paving of adjacent sidewalks. It also included the installation of additional stormwater infrastructure and general items related to road signs and pedestrian safety.
Construction commenced on 7 February at the Marsh and Beach street intersection. The work at Marsh and Beach streets is currently at 70% completion. The planned completion date, including sidewalks is 30 April. The planned date for opening of traffic on this intersection is 10 April. The work on Marsh and Kloof is planned to commence on 11 April and at Marsh and Field on 28 May.
It is planned all three intersections will be completed by 29 July, the municipality noted.
The project is being implemented by the Mossel Bay Municipality’s Town Planning and Roads, Transport and Stormwater departments.
The civil engineer on the project is Bigen Africa Services (Pty) Ltd and the contractor, Benver Civils and Plant Hire (Pty) Ltd.
"The municipality apologises for any inconvenience caused during construction and thanks members of the public, especially business owners and motorists taking the indicated detours, for their cooperation and patience."
The purpose of this upgrade is to implement traffic calming and to provide a level crossing for pedestrians along Marsh Street.
