Leo members get together, gear up to serve

- Linzetta Calitz

Last weekend, Leos from all over Lions District 410W came together for a convention in Wilderness.

The Lions are an international organisation with different chapters which do benevolent work and the Leos are the young leaders of this organisation - the Lions of the future.

Leo club members from Mossel Bay, Sedgefield, Swakopmund, Cape Town and Durbanville, among others, joined the fun and fellowship.

Mia Vorster, president of the St Blaize Leos in Mossel Bay, said the convention was a great chance for Leos to build friendships and have an adventure at the same time.

"Meeting other Leos from across the district

creates lasting bonds and a strong support network. We even got to hike the Kingfisher trail and go kayaking," said Vorster.

The district Leos president, Johnathan Harris, was also at the convention.

"Everyone seems to agree he's a fantastic role model, making a positive impact on the world. He travelled with Omega (aged 18 to 35) and Alfa (under 18) Leos all the way from Namibia to come to make the statement that the Leos will change the world one project at a time," said Vorster

A major focus of the convention was Mission 1.5, which Vorster explained was all about growing the number of Leos in the district.

Harris said: "The youth is not the future, the youth is the now," emphasising the importance of young people getting involved in service work today.

Vorster said the number of Leos in the district had dropped from 5 000 before Covid-19 to just 350 now. However, the remaining Leos were still passionate about making a difference in their communities.

The convention served as a chance for Leos to brainstorm new ideas and create plans for the future. With their motto, "Where there's a need, there's a Leo," these young leaders strive to make a positive impact on the world.

"We can't wait to show Mossel Bay what we have in store," said Vorster.

The St Blaize Mossel Bay Leos are actively looking for sponsors from businesses and community organisations to support their coming projects.

Organisations interested in supporting the Leos can contact Vorster (062 417 6796).
