Two of the most powerful women on TV come together to create magic with crossover episodes
THE crossover that took place on Mzansi Magic’s The Queen and 1 Magic’s The
River was mind blowing and made history on South African television. We saw a character of one soapie appearing on another soapie but playing the same character. The scenes, that took place over a period of a week, had viewers not only wanting more but applauding the cast and crew for a job well done.
MAGIC ON SCREEN
The River and The Queen gave us a few spectacular episodes of cast crossover last month. We saw Harriet Khoza, played by Connie Ferguson on The Queen, reaching out to her old friend Lindiwe Dlamini, played by Sindi Dlathu on The River, after an unsuccessful business trip to Colombia.
Lindiwe was surprised to receive a call from her old friend but mentioned that whenever she received a call from Harriet, she knew things were going to get really interesting.
Harriet’s call was to request R10-million from Lindiwe, which she owed the Colombian druglords, and needed it to continue running her drug business. It seemed Harriet was in luck as she was not the only one who needed help.
In exchange for the huge amount of money, Lindiwe also asked Harriet to help her fight a big battle. The feisty Lindiwe needed Harriet to help her get rid of Goliath, who stole a diamond from her. Lindiwe’s husband Zweli, portrayed by Hlomla Dandlala, with the help of Thuso a reformed gangster, recovered the diamond and apprehended Goliath when he was trying to cross the border to Zimbabwe to sell it. The mighty Goliath somehow managed to escape police custody as he was being transferred to another prison. To deal with this monster, the two powerful businesswomen came together and gave us magic on our small screens.
A SECOND CROSSOVER?
Impressed viewers gave positive feedback on social media. Viewers also wanted to know if these two TV soapies will give us more of this crossover in future? The River’s creative producer and scriptwriter, Percy Vilakazi, says, “For now, it’s a once-off. We have established that Lindiwe and Harriet, two very powerful and corrupt women, are good friends. Whether Harriet comes back or not will be dictated by the story.”
Percy also says the whole idea was to give the viewers a treat and have them enjoy the best of both worlds. “Both the viewers of The Queen and The River have been very loyal to the shows. They have also been invested in the stories that we created for them and have bought into the characters. It was fun for us too, as writers, because we’re also fans of both Connie and Sindi, and of both shows,” he says.
Catch The Queen on Mzansi Magic from Monday to Thursday at 9pm and The River every weekday at 8pm.
