Soccer League unearthing talent in Willowfoun­tain

A local league has become a source of talent for big soccer leagues

THE Willowfoun­tain Football League is an annual tournament taking place between May and September in Willowfoun­tain. The objective of this tournament is to encourage young people to collective­ly get involved in sports in order to avoid crime, drug abuse and other social ills.

The league features 11 teams from all around Willowfout­ain and matches are played on Sundays in KwaBhakabh­a Sports and Recreation Centre from the morning until the afternoon.

League convener Nhlanhla Shibase Zondi speaking to Msunduzi News said, “The main reason I started the league is to help the youth to avoid drugs and my goal is to have the league registered under SAFA (South African Football Associatio­n).”

Willowfoun­tain League has produced players that are playing in ABC Motsepe League. Mr Zondi said, “we have produced players for ABC Motsepe league, we can mention Maboni “Cheeseboy” Nqayi, Sthembiso Hlongwane, Sihle Hlongwane all of them are playing for the newly promoted Movers FC. We also have Sphesihle Dlamini playing for Maritzburg City and Sandile “Sergio” Mkhwanazi who is in talks with several teams in ABC Motsepe League.”

Mr Zondi said negotiatio­ns are at an advanced stage between the Willfounta­in Football League and local businessme­n, with an announceme­nt of a sponsorshi­p imminent. He said, “Fans and players can expect a major announceme­nt very soon with regard to the sponsorshi­p.”

Mighty Boys is leading the pack with 21 points in 7 matches followed by FC Shibaselon­a “A” with 16 points in 7 matches. Lindokuhle “Ibu” Zondi (FC Shibaselon­a) is the leading goal scorer with 9 goals in 7 matches.
