Soccer League unearthing talent in Willowfountain
A local league has become a source of talent for big soccer leagues
THE Willowfountain Football League is an annual tournament taking place between May and September in Willowfountain. The objective of this tournament is to encourage young people to collectively get involved in sports in order to avoid crime, drug abuse and other social ills.
The league features 11 teams from all around Willowfoutain and matches are played on Sundays in KwaBhakabha Sports and Recreation Centre from the morning until the afternoon.
League convener Nhlanhla Shibase Zondi speaking to Msunduzi News said, “The main reason I started the league is to help the youth to avoid drugs and my goal is to have the league registered under SAFA (South African Football Association).”
Willowfountain League has produced players that are playing in ABC Motsepe League. Mr Zondi said, “we have produced players for ABC Motsepe league, we can mention Maboni “Cheeseboy” Nqayi, Sthembiso Hlongwane, Sihle Hlongwane all of them are playing for the newly promoted Movers FC. We also have Sphesihle Dlamini playing for Maritzburg City and Sandile “Sergio” Mkhwanazi who is in talks with several teams in ABC Motsepe League.”
Mr Zondi said negotiations are at an advanced stage between the Willfountain Football League and local businessmen, with an announcement of a sponsorship imminent. He said, “Fans and players can expect a major announcement very soon with regard to the sponsorship.”
Mighty Boys is leading the pack with 21 points in 7 matches followed by FC Shibaselona “A” with 16 points in 7 matches. Lindokuhle “Ibu” Zondi (FC Shibaselona) is the leading goal scorer with 9 goals in 7 matches.
