Man arrested for rape of girlfriend

A man accused of assaulting and raping his girlfriend appeared in the Graaff-Reinet Magistrate’s Court on 3 September. The case was postponed until 9 September.

The 24-year-old man is accused of assaulting the woman (41) in Vrygronde, Umasizakhe, on the last day of Women’s Month.

According to a statement by the victim, the man then went on to rape her on the evening of 1 September. The incidents took place after the suspect accused the victim of having an affair.

"The victim reported the rape and assault to the Graaff-Reinet SAPS late Wednesday 2 September, and the suspect was arrested for rape and assault soon after the case was made," Capt Bradley Rawlinson, spokesperson of the station, told the Advertiser.

The arrest was made by the Graaff-Reinet Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
