The Ritual Adam Nevill

FOUR old university friends reunite for a hiking trip in the Scandinavian wilderness of the Arctic Circle, but a lot has changed since those days – each has grown up and no longer seems to have much in common with the others. Tensions rise, and to speed the trip along the guys take a shortcut. Things go from bad to worse when they get lost and stumble across an old house, inside which they find the macabre remains of old rites and pagan sacrifices – ancient artefacts and unidentifiable bones – and they begin to realise that they may not alone in the wilderness. This is a thriller that really starts out promisingly but takes a direction that somewhat spoils what could have been an amazing story. Nevertheless, Adam Nevill clearly has an impressive imagination and creativity, and, despite the flaws, held our attention throughout.
