Impalas taught a tough lesson

- Herbert Rachuene

The Limpopo Impalas were taught a hard lesson in their Cricket South Africa division two four-day match against the Six-Gun Grill SWD cricket team.

Impalas opted to bat first and were dismissed for 227 in their first innings and 69 in their second innings at a match played at the Polokwane Cricket Club between January 27 and 31.

The visitors responded with 245 in their first innings and 52/2 in their second innings, to clinch the series.

Impalas captain Thomas Hobson and Malcolm Nofal were some of the top performing batters on the Impalas’ side after they accumulated 60 runs each.

“They have done well in the series and have a good average. They must continue to lead by example and motivate young players in the team,” said Impalas CEO Tommy Phiri.

Top batters on the SWD side were Yaseen Vali and Leus du Plooy who scored 67 and 43 respectively.

Phiri said they were let down by their middle batting order. “We could have accumulated 350 runs if the middle batting order had exerted themselves well during the series. We need to create a good balance with the senior and young players. We had a lot of youngsters

from various clubs in the province who made their debut in the team in the last match. We are not afraid to expose them to the professional matches, and do so because we want to give them national cricket experience.”

The Impalas will hope to redeem themselves in the second match of the series which will be played against KwaZulu-Natal Inland at the City Oval Pietermaritzburg on March 3.
