Self-taught artist inks his mark

- Anne Molope

Alexander Modiba is a self-taught tattoo artist from Fauna Park who specialises in realism tattoos and piercings.

Modiba tells Polokwane Observer that he has been in the industry for seven years and works exclusively from home.

“Despite being a self-taught artist, I want my prospective clients to be aware that I only tattoo in realism.

“My goal is to create masterpieces,” he says.

Modiba schooled at Northern Academy and studied graphic design at the University of Johannesburg.

“During my second year, I had a change of heart as I was disappointed with my performance with my field of study. My path shifted and I dropped out. I regarded the following years as gap years and browsed YouTube to learn more about the art of tattooing. The rest is history.”

His choice to become a tattoo artist, he says, stems from his childhood and his love for graffiti, Marvel comics and tattoos, which he has converted into realistic pieces.

“I enjoy learning about life from experience and not in a classroom, which is another reason I quit varsity.

“To me, a degree in graphic design was no different than attempting to sumit the highest mountain in the world,” he added.

Modiba says his work allows him to meet new people on a daily basis.

“As a semi-introvert, I never thought I would enjoy meeting new people, but every experience is unique and rewarding. Working in the comfort of my own home is also a bonus.”

He concluded that he wants his clients to be proud and walk out of his studio satisfied with the work he has done.
