- Herbert Rachuene

Fencers affiliated to Sello Maduma Fencing Academy won various medals at the Eastern Cape Open in Port Elizabeth on February 6.

South African national team fencer, Rahul van Manen won gold in u/20 foil, silver in u/20 epee and silver and bronze in senior epee events.

Another top performers at the event was emerging fencer, Safiya Khan Patel who won silver in u/20 epee and bronze in the same category.

Veteran fencer and chairperson of Limpopo Fencing Association, Renuka Ramroop walked away with a gold in veterans epee.

Head coach of the academy Sello Maduma said the achievements of the fencers are as a result of the hard work they have put in. “Our new fencers are doing well. We have new fencers in Safiya Khan Patel who has won her first major medal in the senior category at the event and that is encouraging. The fencers have been consistent and what makes us even happier is that their hard work is paying off and they can see that for themselves. They must keep working hard and do their best in every tournament.”

Maduma added that they will host a provincial fencing grading tournament in Polokwane in March. “The tournament will afford fencers from our clubs as well as other clubs the opportunity to improve their grading. We will also be having fencers from the University of Limpopo.”
