Assistance to solve Tayob murder - cops
The police in Polokwane calls on anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects involved in the murder of professor Saber Tayob to contact them immediately.
Any information can be shared with Warrant Officer Joseph Malebana on 072 492 9635 or the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111. Callers may opt to remain anonymous and any information received will be treated as confidential.
This comes after the cold blooded shooting of Tayob on Sunday morning while he was jogging in Ster Park. According to police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, the police have launched a manhunt for the suspects involved in the killing of the 51-year-old University of Limpopo lecturer and chartered accountant.
“It is said that he was jogging when a white Volkswagen Polo stopped next to him. An occupant of the vehicle disembarked and shot the victim several times before fleeing the scene. The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage.”
The acting provincial police commissioner, Major General Jan Scheepers has called on community members with information to come forward and assist in the investigation.
The University of Limpopo released a media statement saying the institution and the Faculty of Management and Law (FML) are devastated by his passing and vicechancellor and principal professor Mahlo Mokgalong expressed shock and dismay at the passing of one of the university’s rising academics and leaders.
According to the statement, Mohammed was the director of the school of accountancy at the university since March 2020.
He joined the University of Limpopo in October 2009 as a senior lecturer of accounting and auditing, earning promotion to associate professor on July 1, 2017.
He was also the acting programme coordinator for the university’s postgraduate diploma in accountancy (PGDA) since the beginning of 2020.
“Prof Tayob was a seasoned chartered accountant and academic, who served the school of accountancy with distinction, making it his purpose to help it grow as a centre of excellence in all its disciplines. To this end, he worked tirelessly for the school to gain sustainable success in its core business of teaching and learning, research and community engagement.
He was instrumental in ensuring that the University of Limpopo gained accreditation by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (Saica) to offer the Bachelor of Accounting Science and PGDA independently in 2011 and 2017 respectively. These milestones allowed the university to produce chartered accountants, quite a pivotal accomplishment.”
