E-learning to benefit learners

- Barry Viljoen

Learning and teaching at 50 schools across the Capricorn district received a major boost when the Capricorn District Municipality (CDM) and MTN launched an e-learning programme at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex on Friday.

This initiative will benefit schools in both Capricorn North and South districts with a donation of 50 tablets, to facilitate a virtual learning environment by enabling learners to access learning material and interact with their teachers online.

“This partnership will go a long way in ensuring that schools embrace new ways of learning,” Mayor Mamedupi Teffo said, and expressed gratitude to the MTN Foundation for coming on board.

“There can be no better corporate social investment than investing in the education of our children and we thank MTN for this partnership,” she said and added that the municipality comes a long way in supporting schools in various ways. “We saw it as our inescapable duty to join forces with the MTN Foundation in this mission to ensure that our children are supported through online learning resources and effective, engaging electronic content and for teachers to be skilled in facilitating lessons through interactive digital platforms,” the mayor assured the representatives of the MTN Foundation.

“As the Capricorn District Municipality, it is indeed a pleasure for us to launch this programme, which represents another giant step in our continued effort to support schools and empower them to perform better. This is because we view education as a springboard on which the future of our district depends; and without which we will otherwise be at the risk of swerving off the path of development,” Teffo said and explained that the Covid-19 pandemic called for alternative methods of teaching and learning and created an opportunity to extend physical classrooms and libraries to a virtual learning environment and online library. “And the only viable way to do so is to find partnerships with entities whose values are guided by ubuntu and the pioneering spirit of corporate social investment. Indeed, as former president Thabo Mbeki once said, that there can be no better corporate social investment than investing in the education of our children,” the

Teffo said.

“It is against this background that as the Capricorn District Municipality, we saw it as our unavoidable duty to join forces with the MTN Foundation in this mission to ensure that our children are supported through online learning resources, effective and engaging electronic content and for teachers to be skilled in interactive

digital platforms,” she concluded.
