TUT takes students’ well-being serious

A day full of fun games and educationa­l activities awaited TUT students at the Polokwane campus last Thursday to raise awareness on student health and wellness.

The university’s SAED directorat­e forum in cooperatio­n with educators, educators organised an open op day to reach out ou to students on matters that con concern them on campus and at studen student residences. residence

Games Game such as sack race, chess, netball, soccer and a dance competitio­n were hosted to add to the programme of the day. Vaccinatio­n centres and HIV testing stations were made available on campus.

The organisers said the aim of the programme was to reach out to students to know the importance of having a student developmen­t and support office and the services they offer to students.

Among the topics discussed were genderbase­d violence.

Polokwane Observer spoke to the organiser, Matimba Maimela who said the purpose of the open day was to educated students about campus life and on where they can receive assistance should they come across challenges.

SAED secretary Mamokone Mohale added that they wanted to ensure students are informed on the vibrant campus life that is supportive yet thought-provoking.

Educator Maswikeng Kgothatso said the open day was a great initiative by the university as it allowed an opportunit­y for students to be educated on their personal health and wellness.

“Such events make students feel safe to approach us on issues and we make sure we are visible to them with the right methods that align to student developmen­t support. We get to inform first- year students on varsity life and other social issues such as gender-based violence, HIV and counsellin­g that is available on campus.”

Maswikeng added that it is an advantage that the university is able to host such events and as educators it gives them an opportunit­y to implement what they have learnt.
