Priest needs help to assist needy

- Miranda Chauke

Sellaboshego Donald Mabitsela is a Catholic priest who is passionate about bringing change.

He started the non-profit organisation, Father Mabitsela Foundation in 2020 after the idea came to him while walking down the streets of Polokwane.

Mabitsela was approached by a woman, whom he had never met and who did not know him, who asked him to assist her by buying school shoes for her son.

“She was with her son and when I looked at him, the school shoes that he wore were torn. I bought the shoes but after that I couldn’t sleep because it reminded me of my own experience growing up in poverty. I didn’t have school shoes growing up either,” he explained.

Mabitsela therefore started the foundation, which initially started as a single project to collect and donate school shoes to rural schools in Polokwane and surrounds.

Over time the foundation grew and they now donate sanitary pads, food parcels and used clothes to those in need. The foundation also hosts career exhibitions at school.

“I want to ask that people who are financially able, e, to donate things to assist those in need,” he said.

The major challenge hallenge that he faces is money, ney, but he added that people ople have been forthcoming with donations of material things s that they need.

“I urge people le to continue to help us help p people. What they have ve is by the grace of God od and we need to come me together to help lp people who are e in need,” he said. .
