- Anne Mametja

Karatekas from various karate clubs in the province put their kicks, katas and punches to the test on Saturday.

They participated in the Limpopo Martial Arts Open Tournament 2022 which was held at the PEPPS hall.

The tournament was organised by Limpopo Sport Karate and Kickboxing Academy (LPSKKA) sensei Peter Bronkhorst who was excited about the event.

Families came in numbers to support the young and old karatekas who gave it their all.

The karatekas were closely observed by their senseis and karate icons kancho Alex Tebbutt and shihan Stanley de Cruz from Tebbutt’s Academy in Gauteng who came all the way to be part of the tournament.

Bronkhorst told Polokwane Observer the event was a success and that he appreciates every club and karateka who participated in the competition.

“Everything went well and I applaud everyone who took time to be part of this tournament which will help them sharpen their skills even more,” he said.

Bronkhorst explained karate and kickboxing complement one another. He added that kickboxing is a form of boxing based on punching and kicking.

“The sport incorporates moves from other types of martial arts, such as karate, as well as boxing. The advantage about these sports is that kickboxing and karate offer a number of health benefits for people of all ages,” he concluded.
