ANC joins hands to send relief packages to KZN
The ANC in Limpopo has sent a truckload of relief packages to flood victims in KwaZuluNatal (KZN).
The party has called upon citizens to donate items they don’t use towards the relief packages they put together.
ANC provincial secretary Soviet Lekganyane explained that the relief efforts are out of empathy and solidarity with the victims of the floods.
“Let us not forget the African philosophy of Ubuntu,” he emphasised.
The party identified drop-off areas in the 22 municipalities across the province. All the items that were collected were brought to the provincial office where they were loaded onto an eight-ton truck for transportation to KZN. “The truck is filled to capacity and people continue to make donations which we encourage. If it means we have to send a truck to KZN every week then so be it. Even if we only have two items, we will find a way to get it to the victims,” he said.
Initially, the truck was supposed to have left on May 10 but as a result of the mining indaba, President Cyril Ramaphosa will only be available on May 21. All provinces will deliver their relief packages on that day. It is something that is centrally coordinated and the leadership of the ANC in all provinces must be present on that day. “Every province will present its relief package to the people of KZN,” he added.
Lekganyane explained they have managed to collect food such as mielie meal, rice and nonperishables. They have also collected clothes and blankets. He is adamant that they have taken record of everything that has been donated to allow accountability and transparency.
He urged people to continue to make donations according to the African philosophy of Ubuntu. “Nobody has to be reminded about Ubuntu. Those families that find themselves at the wrath of nature today, we don’t know if they are going to give birth to a medical doctor who is going to cure some of the ailments that the current generations are unable to do. We don’t know what the future holds,” he said.
