The Capricorn Open Tournament for male and female badminton players took place at the Polokwane Badminton Club on Saturday.

The casual sports tourney saw 49 players from different clubs in Limpopo as well as players from Middelburg, Mpumalanga who competed for podium positions. The event was played in the best of three sets.

Match controller, Zara Varghese said the competition was challenging as the tournament helps players to make necessary changes to their game. “After the play-offs we had today I am confident that we can compete in national tournaments.”

The men’s singles title was won by Benjamin de Waal and the women’s singles category by Varghese.

In the men’s doubles category Benjamin and Dirk de Waal secured first place while Olga Joubert and Varghese claimed the victory in the women’s double category.

Sonja le Roux, after her final match against Dakalo Phaswana, said the game was good and she played well.

Her opponent said she did not reach her expectations. “I think my biggest challenge is that I give up too easily and that gives my opponent an advantage. I need to work on that,” said Phaswana.

The winner of the mixed doubles were Wasim Nawaz and Varghese.

Training is offered by the club for anyone who is interested to join. For more information contact coach Daniel Joubert on 073 054 4500.
