Beyond Disability SA hosts Disability Heritage Day

- Anne Mametja

For Beyond Disability SA, there was no better venue to host a Disability Heritage Day event than the Association for Persons With Disability (APD) in Polokwane.

The organisation hosted many disability awareness events over the years, but this was their first-ever Disability Heritage

Day event. Beyond Disability SA founder Solomon Ramauka told Polokwane Observer the purpose of the Disability Heritage Day celebration was to showcase, learn, grow, explore and experience the vibrant and diverse cultures that exist within our glorious rainbow nation.

“We also wanted to celebrate Deaf and Albinism Awareness month,” Ramauka added. Beyond Disability SA, Deafsa Limpopo, APD, Albinism Society Limpopo and the University of Limpopo (UL) representatives were present in support of the event.

Various cultural dance groups, which consisted of learners from Helen Franz Special School, Bosele School for the Blind and Deaf, as well as Yingisani Special School, formed part of the event as they gathered at the APD pool area to entertain the audience with traditional dance and music playing on the special day. The dance groups performed routines to various songs and dance styles on stage, followed by a number of cultural activities, motivational speakers and fun game-based competitions.

“We want to make this event an annual one. We had a profound impact on the community with regards to nation building and social cohesion for persons with disabilities.

“Thank you to everyone who attended,” Ramakau concluded.
