Dart players enjoy First Rebels League of the year

- Miranda Chauke

The Polokwane Rabbits Franchise hosted their first Rebels League of the year at Bosveld Pub & Grill on Saturday.

They played under the banner of the African Darts Group, which is endorsed by South Africa’s only professional darts player, Devon Petersen.

In Limpopo, three local franchises form part of the initiative which gives all darts players equal opportunities to improve themselves in the sport irrespective of race, gender or age.

The African Darts Group spreads across the continent and often sees local, national and international franchises competing against each other.

This weekend, the Polokwane Rabbits,

Wild Stallions and Limpopo Tigers franchises took part, with players travelling from Polokwane, Louis Trichardt, Mookgopong, Levubu, Musina and Modimolle, bringing together 72 players including eight juniors.

“The day started with the team events where the pro-elite, elite and super leagues were won by the Rabbits Franchise ensuring a clean sweep, with the Wild Stallions in second and Limpopo Tigers third,” explained Willem Roets, the president of the Rabbits Franchise.

“Thereafter, an open competition was held with a 701, best of three doubles knockout which saw local heroes Bobby Wills and Riaan van Rensburg taking the spoils ahead of father and son duo Barend and Bazille Viljoen. This was followed with a 501, best of three singles event which saw André Erasmus from Levubu winning in fine style, beating Eddie Kruger in the men’s final and Andrea Bothma winning the women’s section,” he added.

Other noteworthy achievements included Bobby Wills, 101 close and 18 darts, Riaan van Rensburg and Chris Harmse 17 darts, and Jannie van Wyk with a 105 close.

The Rabbits Franchise welcomes all interested players to join them on Wednesdays from 18:00 in their local league at Bosveld Pub & Grill.
