2002

Popular Mechanics (South Africa) - - News -

16 years ago we wrote about the blazing new data speeds we’d be able to achieve on our cellphones. That speed was GPRS.

The best phones such as Nokia, Motorola, Ericsson, Siemens and Psion would be capable of reaching transmission rates of 43 kbps.

The cellphone itself was also in a state of transition in 2002. SMS was still fairly new and had kinks that needed to be worked out and the messaging culture that’s become the norm today, had not yet begun to blossom.
