Cut­ting holes for down­lights, or any­thing else that needs to go in the ceil­ing, is al­ways a very messy ex­er­cise. If you have ac­cess to your roof space, save your­self the mess and just drill a pilot hole for each light. Then tape a plas­tic bag over the un­der­side of each hole and drill the holes from the top us­ing a hole saw or jig­saw. This way, you will cap­ture all the dust and mess in the bag, and you en­sure that you don’t hit any wiring or bran­der­ing in the roof. Chris van Strijp, Rand­burg
