GREAT NEW STUFF Our favourite gadgets and accessories from 2018

2E0I PRO Head over to popularmechan to find out how to enter.

It’s that time of year when smartphone manufacturers unveil their best devices and everyone asks, ‘Which is the best phone?’ or ‘Which one do I get?’

If you’re an Android fan, then there is really only one device you should be eyeing – the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

It has a 6.39-inch 2K OLED display, 3D Face Unlock, a fingerprint scanner under the display, 40 W Supercharge (which can charge your battery to 70 per cent in 30 minutes), 15 W wireless fast charge, as well as reverse wireless charge.

Despite having the same size display as the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, the phone itself is smaller, more comfortable to use, and has a larger (4 200 mah) battery.

A new Leica triple rear camera set-up rounds up the features and replaces the monochrome lens with an ultra wide-angle one. Huawei also has a nifty macro mode, which lets you take pictures as close as 2.5 cm from the subject.

The only let-down is the software. The EMUI interface is lighter and cleaner than before, but it’s still a long way from where it could be. Huawei’s new navigation gestures are unapologetically Appleinspired, but they feel as smooth and intuitive as anything Apple has ever done before – something that no other Android manufacturer has ever managed.

This phone is so well thought out and put together that it gets the title of our Phone of the Year. R18 999 (at networks across the country)
