This knot was orig­i­nally used by sailors to pre­vent chaf­ing around ring bolts on a ship deck, and to pad the land­ing of fall­ing cargo. To­day, it is mostly dec­o­ra­tive. Who says some­thing can’t be use­ful and aes­thet­i­cally pleas­ing?

When you might use it:

• Coast­ers, hot pads and ta­ble mats

• Larger ver­sions make good stair treads, floor mats or chair cov­ers

• Framed dec­o­ra­tions, hang­ing dec­o­ra­tions, or jew­ellery
