LEARNING EXPERIENCES

- – Mark, Editor

Firstly I want to say thank you for a great mag. I buy a subscription for my husband for his birthday every single year and I end up scoring out of it because I enjoy reading it as well (I love the DIY projects). My boys use the old subscriptions for their school projects, so you could say it’s a family magazine.

But my letter is actually about my bond with my father, and how woodwork gives us quality time together. I have been fortunate enough to be a stay-at-home mom for the past three years. My dad, an accountant by trade but carpenter by heart, retired

last year and you could say that wood runs in my family’s veins – that includes my siblings. We have an absolute love for it!

My dad almost died last year – heart failure, and on an evening when we were working on a coffee table together. He’s always been so keen to help me with my Pinterest projects and with restoring old furniture

I buy on Gumtree. I’ve learnt so much from him, as a parent, and to be an independent woman who can work with tools and manage when my hubby isn’t around. I’m so grateful for the time we get together, when he’s able to impart his broad knowledge and skills to me.

Thanks again for a really great magazine. LINDSEY JOUBERT

PS. I’ve just included some pics of a few of my dad’s wonderful woodwork creations.

If you’ve been reading the mag for the past year, you’ll know how I’m able to relate to your letter, Lindsey. Being able to work

together with and absorb knowledge from our parents in topics such as woodwork is a privilege. Sometimes, with how quickly time rushes by,

I worry there just isn’t enough of it to learn everything I ought to. The pics of your various projects are fantastic – I’m particularly amazed at the detailing on your dad’s wine cabinet.
