Must-have hardware for humans on the go

TO BE THE most rugged one among your group of friends, you really ought to don a pair of CAT boots, boasting that old-school allure. They’re the ideal toughie companion.

Now CAT’s taken it further, by developing the perfect smartphone companion for the modern, rugged guy.

Or gal, of course.

The S52 is CAT’s latest entrant into its rugged range, and, wow, is it tough as nails. The best part is that it doesn’t even need a screen protector or a cover. The sleeker design (it’s only 9.69 mm thick) and lightweight properties (210 g) give it everyday-consumer appeal. it’s the thinnest rugged phone in the brand’s line-up.

The folks at CAT have done their homework on this one, with multiple drop tests performed on concrete from up to 1.5 m to check that every corner and crevice will survive an impact. it’s impervious to dust and fully waterproof, proven after being submerged for 35 minutes in 1.5 m of water, and surviving. This gives it a sought-after ip68 rating. it cuts the mustard with the US army too, in tests that include thermal shocks, high- and low-temperature extremes, tumble and vibration tests and salt-mist conditions, which classify it as military-spec

(US military Mil-STD-810G).

The class-leading 12 Mp camera is fast and accurate, featuring a dual-pixel Sony sensor. The ƒ/1.8 aperture and large 1.4 μm pixel size deliver excellent low-light performance.

packaged with a 3 100 mAh battery, you can expect up to a day and a half of solid usage. it comes with Android 9, a touchscreen that can be controlled even with wet fingers or while wearing gloves, a fingerprint sensor for added security, and a host of other cool features that make it ideal for outdoorsy people, or for contractors working on a building site.

FUJIFILM X-T200

The demand for good visual content creators has never been higher, but that also means they need to be carrying a highquality camera as part of their kit. Here, Fujifilm is leading the pack with its latest mirrorless camera, the X-T200 and, although it’s 80 g lighter than its predecessor (the X-T100), its compact body packs a real punch. It can capture 24.2 MP stills at 8 FPS and crisp 4K UHD video. The new vari-angle 16:9 touchscreen LCD can open and close from 0 to 180°, and rotate. The camera has a high-speed APS-C 24.2 MP CMOS sensor that uses copper wiring to give it a boost in performance. All this might make you feel like a pro, but you’ll still be able to shoot with the ease and familiarity of using a much more compact camera.

CR-S700R CANON ROBOTIC

CAMERA SYSTEM

The latest robotic camera system from Canon helps photographers capture still images that they would otherwise be unable to shoot using conventional photography methods. The CR-S700R moves on a remote pan head that can control and shoot pictures remotely using a compatible EOS camera. The pan head utilises a centre-type rotational axis that makes the optical axis of the camera perpendicular to the rotational axis of the remote pan head. This innovation allows for easy zooming, panning, tilting and rolling. The system is best used to shoot subjects moving at high speeds such as in sports matches. The remote pan head has a turning radius of approximately 260 mm, and upright- or underslung use is possible.

FESTOOL KAPEX KS 60

This is one of the best-looking saws in Festool’s most-recent line-up… In fact, it won the iF Design Gold Award for its style, which is no easy feat. But besides its good looks and awardwinning aesthetics, it’s an easy-to-use, fully flexible and precise-sliding compound mitre saw. Built for construction sites, the KS 60 is mobile with ergonomically arranged handles, a retracting cable and a transport safety device. It has remarkably good precision thanks to its 60° mitre angle on both sides and up to 46° in inclination. There’s an LED spotlight to counter the shadow that might be cast by the saw blade, highlighting the cutting lines on the wood without distortion.
