Double killing a mystery

- ISMAIL ADAM

THE gruesome double murder of a couple in Volksrust, Mpumalanga, has left the town in a state of shock.

Dhalip Mohabir, 47, and his partner, Emmegene “Emmy” Brussow, 37, both former Hillary residents, were found brutally murdered in their home in Volksrust on Friday, July 5.

Police made the discovery after being alerted by the neighbours. It is alleged the couple were killed a week before and their bodies left to decompose before police made their finding.

Neighbours told police the couple had visitors staying over on Friday, June 28, because Emmy had asked for permission to sleep over in order to accommodate Mohabir’s friends.

Emmy returned home the next morning and that was the last time she was seen.

It is alleged the perpetrators killed Mohabir the evening before and waited for Emmy to return the next morning.

Mohabir’s body was found on the bed and Emmy was found on the lounge floor. Both bodies were covered in blankets.

Family member, Anthony Bunseelall, who identified the couple, described the state of the bodies as shocking.

“Dhalip and Emmy’s faces were badly disfigured. It looked as if someone had used a metal rake to commit the murders,” said Bunseelall.

“Their faces and heads had taken severe blows but their bodies were untouched.”

According to Mpumalanga police spokesman, Col Leonard Hlathi, a case of murder has been opened.

“We will be making an official press statement soon but I can confirm that it was not a burglary as there were no valuables stolen from the house. A murder docket has been opened and police have recovered an instrument which is believed to have been the murder weapon,” said Hlathi.

His grieving mum, Shala Devi Moodley, described Mohabir as a wonderful son who was loved by his friends.

Moodley said: “This is something that our family will never get over. I knew something was amiss when Dhalip and Emmy were not answering their phones for a few days. My gut feeling told me that something was wrong because my son was someone who contacted me on a regular basis.”

“Dhalip cared for all people and had friends from all races.

“He loved Emmy with all his heart and they were a happy couple. My wish now is for the culprits to be brought to justice.”

Mohabir ran a gardening service and also used his vehicle for deliveries for the local businessmen in Volksrust. He was well known by the local community.

Police are currently investigating any motives and appeal to the public to come forward with any information relating to the incident.
