This romantic drama is a classic!

-

INSPIRED by the O’Henry short story The Last Leaf, this gripping heart-wrenching romantic-drama has ushered in a new breed of classic films from Bollywood.

Breathtaking camera shots, brilliant set-pieces and an indulgent storyline make this a cinematic feast.

Set in West Bengal in 1953, visiting archaeologist Varun Shrivastav (Ranveer) comes to the village of Manikpur to excavate the temple grounds of a local Zamindar (landowner).

With an incredible amount of knowledge and experience in his field of work, Varun impresses the Zamindar and his family, particularly his much loved daughter Pakhi (Sonakshi).

The attraction between Varun and Pakhi leads to a tender and deep love, until Varun is forced to choose between his newfound love and his past.

Making his choice, Varun disappears.

Pakhi struggles to move on with her life, determined to forget him and their relationship.

Varun returns to Manikpur under the most extraordinary circumstances.

Vikramaditya Motwane’s artistic presentation and visuals create a magnificent canvas wherein the charm of the characterisations is given its vibrancy.

Lootera is a poignant tearjerker.

Manipulating emotion in a manner that avoids clichés, it adheres strictly to the commands of its script.

Brimming with colour and passion, it pulls its emotional kick from tremendous performances of the leads.

Ranveer and Sonakshi are terrific together.

Whenever they share the screen, it is their devastating emotional camaraderie that gives the film its most sensational moments.

The performances of its two graceful leads keeps the story unfolding with delightful ease.

The film suffers from a slight unevenness after the engaging first half.

The melodramatic lengthy second half drags along with some added story complications.

Still, with a film like this, one is tempted to lose oneself amid the enduring appeal of something so beautifully crafted rather than complain about what easily misses the eye.

It’s one of the best films you’ll watch this year!

A cinematic triumph that is a must watch for fans of classic Hindi cinema.
