BUYING DRUGS TOGETHER IS NO REASON TO GET BAIL

-

IN LAST week’s edition, we published a story on Mark Donovan Ramdass, the man accused of fatally strangling his girlfriend with an extension cord in March this year.

He told a Durban magistrate he intended pleading not guilty to the crime. Last Tuesday, he submitted a six-page affidavit as to why the court should grant him bail.

The 30-year-old said his defence would be one of “diminished criminal liability”, particularly to the charge of pre-meditated murder. He faces murder and robbery charges relating to an incident in which he is accused of strangling his long-time girlfriend, Ashika Singh, with an extension cord. Users on our Facebook page, POST Newspaper, commented.

- Keshnee Hansjee: This is so disturbing. He killed her, turned himself in and is now pleading not guilty? No one wants someone like this in their community and certainly not after he took one of our own. He needs to be sentenced as soon as possible.

- Nirvana Govender: Who wants a nut loose? Nowadays criminals have more rights than victims. But why should we expect any better? Look at our government.

- Preneven Naidoo Dillan Violen: He needs Barker from Isidingo to be his long lost uncle to get what he wants. Best he sit in prison or he won't live a peaceful life with the community on his back.

- Chantal Govender: The audacity. He said he and his girlfriend bought drugs together. Does that mean bail should be granted to him? Lots of these men are killing their partners and coming with their own stories as if it is okay to kill. Damn. These men should not be given bail. A lesson needs to be taught and sent out to men, that have their own ways with women. They don’t own these women. If the state grants bail then it’s sad to say how crime is encouraged by this law and government.

- Indira De Sousa: He gets to defend himself. What about the deceased and her family? He must pay for taking a life. It is pointless pointing fingers at a person who can't defend herself.

- Jane Samuel: The dead can’t speak but God will work wonders.

- Ravisha Namdhari: This man does not need a mental assessment because he has proved to everybody that he knows a lot. What this man needs, is to be convicted and sentenced with regard to the murder that he himself has confessed to after he handed himself over to the police. I do not clearly understand the justice system that we have. Why send these monsters for mental assessments when they proved to be 100% fine at the time of committing the crime? Things and choices like this make South Africa a harmful country to live in because the criminals of today are more likely to be favoured in a way by being sent for mental assessments rather than being sentenced. Our justice system is turning out to be as corrupt as the mind and thoughts of each criminal that they deal with.

- Candice J. Singh: He can lie as much as he wants to. No one can save him from the man above and our angel cousin.

- Mohomed Naeem Khan: He took a life, someone's child away without any reason. He does not deserve to get bail to go back to his normal life when the woman he killed lies stiff and cold in her grave and leaving the family to suffer. Unacceptable.

- Razeen Gutta: This is getting more unbelievable by the day. And more upsetting too. Justice needs to be meted out. He knows and is even accepting that he was wrong. Whether he is mentally unstable or not, murder is murder and cannot be justified.

- Rishern Singh: This is utter nonsense that Mark has a six-page bail application. These six pages cannot change what he has done. At the end of the day he did commit murder and must pay for his bad doings. I doubt Ashika would have supported his drug addiction. He is a liar and justice shall be served.

- Sheila Moodley Spiritsoul: Our courts and justice system are useless. They have enough evidence to put him away for life, yet they drag the process along. Why should they listen to his stories? Drug addicts are good at storytelling. He shows no remorse for his heinous deeds. They should bring back the death penalty. Same goes for Kandasamy and others who kill in cold blood and feel nothing about their deeds. These idiots still think they can walk this earth.
