Umkomaas man’s mystery death

- JOLENE MARRIAH

AN UMKOMAAS family are desperately searching for answers that led to the death of Rajen Govender.

Govender, 37, a manager at a logistics company in Pinetown, was found slumped in his car with two bullet wounds – one to the head and the other to the chest.

His car was parked on the emergency lane on the N2, northbound carriageway, last Tuesday morning.

According to Govender’s nephew, Neelan Naicker, his uncle left his Umkomaas home at around 5am and was heading for Pinetown when tragedy struck.

“We are in the dark as to what happened between Umkomaas and Prospecton. All we know is that the police found the car and alerted his work colleague who, in turn, contacted me. My uncle was shot twice and his cellphone was taken. We are hoping witnesses and the police can shed light on the circumstances.” He added despite efforts by paramedics, Govender died at the scene. Naicker said Govender’s four-year-old son, Aryan, was taking the news badly.

“Aryan waits every afternoon for his father to return home. Both would go to the local supermarket for sweets and treats.”

Naicker described his uncle as a family man. “He spent all his free time with his wife Charmaine, daughter Kayleen (11) and Aryan.”

Naicker said Govender lived in the family temple premises.

“He was religious and would not raise his voice and loved people. It is a tragedy that he had to lose his life in this way.” Govender was buried last Wednesday at the Umkomaas Cemetery.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed that a male sustained fatal gunshot wounds to the head and chest.
